This week’s Film: 13th
This film argues that there is a direct link between American slavery and the modern American prison. There are three primary themes the film maker uses to support this argument. These themes are:
(1) African Americans dehumanized, and portrayed as criminals by people in power, and media (2) Mass Incarceration by the state as replacement for slavery. (3) Corporate interests that shape prison population
Explain the film makers argument using these themes. Identify two specific and detailed examples OF EACH of the themes above. Your examples must be substantive, and clearly explained. Include such things as popular media and film, actions by political leaders, laws and legislation, and partnerships between corporate/political organizations and prisons. Use these detailed examples to support your summary of the film makers argument.
