Find ONE job posting in the field you wish to work in. For the purposes of this assignment, you are looking for a job/position not necessarily in the company of your dreams (they may not be hiring right now!). You can also present yourself as either (1) having successfully passing your diploma and other required training or (2) being on track to complete this by the end of the summer semester. You will use this job posting as the basis of your Career Narrative (see .
Create your Career Narrative (see “Primary Task: The Career Narrative” below).
At the end of your Career Narrative, insert a page break and paste the job posting. Make sure you include a hyperlinked URL.
Primary Task: The Career Narrative
Write a 400-500 word Career Narrative in response to your job posting, using information and language relevant to the job ad and notes developed from the MindTools Activity, the Résumé Activity, and your earlier True Colors™ assignment. Your Career Narrative should be about 1.5-2 pages, double-spaced.
Audience:
The narrative is pitched to the recruiter of the company/organization responsible for posting the job position you are interested in applying for. Make sure you are talking to the audience who will be reading your career narrative in a direct, conversational manner.
Guidelines:
Primary Task: The Career Narrative
Start with an opening, direct-approach introductory paragraph that includes a clear purpose
statement. This section does not require a sub-heading.
Clearly state the position you are applying for and where you found the posting (e.g. “the position of research clerk posted May 11 on Workopolis”). Make sure the posting has a clear list of responsibilities, and (hopefully) skills. Your task is to persuasively demonstrate your “fit” for both the job postingand the company/employer, so you need to demonstrate (1) your competencies (responsibilities: review The Guelph-Humber CCR Competencies Framework) and (2) your level of skillset (skills: this is where your True Colors™, SWOT Analysis, and Résumé will help you).
To build content for your Career Narrative, answer the following questions in logical sequence,
with clearly developed paragraphs and full sentence structure. Modify the sub-headings listed
below as needed to create your own.
Use the attached grading rubric as a guide and checklist.
PART 1: Overview and Work Experience
Your first sentence is something like the following (but can be modified): I am qualified for the position of _________________________ because of (state relevant skill + experience: capture the reader’s attention!).
Again, consider content that will persuade the reader that you are a good “fit.”
PART 2: Personal Development and Lessons Learned
Generate TWO stories of skills and values with relevance to the job ad. Remember that a story includes a protagonist who faces a challenge or a new situation, and then makes a choice that results in an outcome.
PART 3: Concluding sentence
Cite some key language from the organization’s posting and reinforce how your profile fits the requirements: Example: “Your posting says that […]. I am […], so [….]. Then end with a clear action request. Review the posted student samples.
Remember: this is a persuasive pitch for the employer’s attention, so make sure to end on a strong note!
N.b. – Write out stories that you are comfortable with / proud to share because your narrative will be the basis for your video script. This video will NOT be viewed by anyone other than me, unless you have provided me with permission to share it.

52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
