Assessing and Treating Patients With Bipolar Disorder Essay
Instructions
Bipolar disorder is a unique disorder that causes shifts in mood and energy, which results in depression and mania for patients. Proper diagnosis of this disorder is often a challenge for two reasons: 1) patients often present as depressive or manic but may have both; and 2) many symptoms of bipolar disorder are similar to other disorders. Misdiagnosis is common, making it essential for you to have a deep understanding of the disorder’s pathophysiology. For this Assignment, as you examine the patient case study in this week’s Learning Resources, consider how you might assess and treat patients presenting with bipolar disorder.
Examine Case Study: An Asian American Woman. Diagnosis-Bipolar Disorder. You will be asked to make three decisions concerning the medication to prescribe to this patient. Be sure to consider factors that might impact the patient’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes.
At each decision point, you should evaluate all options before selecting your decision and moving throughout the exercise. Before you make your decision, make sure that you have researched each option and that you evaluate the decision that you will select. Be sure to research each option using the primary literature.

After 8 years of working as a teacher in a developing country with special needs children, I realized the importance of understanding and learning about this emerging field of ABA to recognize the unique behaviors and developmental stages of these children and develop strategic therapeutic programs to help them reach their full potential. As an educator, I Have witnessed the anxiety, stress, and concerns among parents about their special needs children’s behavioral troubles.
Therefore, my professional aim is to obtain a high-quality education that will educate me on the science of development, behavior, and learning, as well as promote progress among special needs children. The ideas and practices I’ve learned will help me identify problematic behaviors inhibiting students’ learning and devise interventions to help them change.
I admit that I had a very difficult time when doing my Bachelors and my grades suffered as a result. I don’t mean to make excuses for my poor academic performance, but I would like to explain the circumstances. When I enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree I did not foresee my mom being diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis. While she was sick her disease progressed and the symptoms started to spread in her body. I had to drive her to the hospital and attend the lectures at the same time while doing a full-time job.
Needless to say, about the long queues that I had to be in Sri Lanka to get an appointment with a doctor for my mom who was in so much pain. The household responsibilities and long drives each way cut into my study time as did the chores I had to do at home while taking care of my little brother. I understand now that I should have explained my situation and taken a leave of absence as I thought I could handle everything. But I can guarantee you how much I worked hard when I moved to Canada with my VCS course and I obtained a overall GPA of 3.44 in order to achieve my dream. I hope I will get a chance to prove myself one more time at ASU and I am open to any suggestions by the admission board.

2) Describe a quality that you believe is critical in working with an individual with special needs and include at least one situation where you have demonstrated this quality
People who work with individuals with special needs should be motivating and interesting as the individuals themselves. These individuals not only have special needs but also have a vibrant identity. As a result, it has become vital to have excellent educators, behavior consultants, and caregivers who possess the necessary characteristics. Individuals with special needs frequently face challenges that others would never understand. I believe kindness is one of the amazing qualities that I possess as a Senior Behavior Interventionist/ Junior Behavior Consultant. Working with children for more than 10 years has made me realize that when they are surrounded by individuals who are sympathetic and kind, they tend to overcome struggles such as meltdowns, setbacks, and obstacles quite easily.
One of my clients who was non-verbal had a hard day at school and he had a session after school with me. During my session when he was asked to trace lines, he got very frustrated and started hitting himself with his hand. He also started swearing and making loud noises. I redirected him to his ‘calm down spot’ as this behavior was a little unusual and hummed his favorite tune while holding his hands. He started crying and laughing at the same time which made me realize how hard it must have been for him to express himself what he has been going through all day. As a Senior Behavior Interventionist/ Junior Behavior Consultant, I strongly believe that children who are non-verbal like to be heard by expressing their emotions even though they cannot communicate. Showing kindness in situations like this helps individuals to calm down and understand their emotions in an effective manner.
4) Briefly discuss why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree at this time. What steps have you taken (or will you take) to ensure that you will be successful in this program?
The field of applied behavior analysis has expanded in tandem with the rise in autism cases, but this field lacks a lot of qualified and experienced professionals. I experienced this in Sri Lanka where there are only a few consultants to help thousands of individuals. The high demand in this field has created the need of job opportunities in order to help individuals with their learning and behavior. I became interested in pursuing my master’s degree in ASU because I have witnessed in Sri Lanka how parents and kids suffer without proper support from professionals.
Therefore, when I migrated to Canada I decided to learn about ABA by following a VCS course in order to understand in depth about autism. After completing the certificate program after my bachelor’s I have decided to take the step forward to pursue what I have always dreamt of, which is to help individuals with autism. Being a teacher, behavior interventionist, educational interventionist, senior behavior interventionist/ Junior Behavior Consultant has always made me seek answers for different problem behaviors. Therefore, I believe a master’s degree from ASU would suit me well to be equipped with the toolset to help individuals who really seek help.
ABA is a rewarding field where I can assist individuals with their challenges, also parents come on educators or other professionals to help learn about the links between their different behaviors. In fact, many behavior analysts I’ve worked with have inspired me to become one of them in the future therefore it is my main goal in life to become a behavior analyst to support and help not only individuals but families who need support.
I have completed the DABA program which is approved by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). The core of the program is built on the principles of ABA, an evidence–based, scientific approach to changing human behavior in order to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to work with people who have autism. I am also working as a Junior Behavior Interventionist/ Senior Behavior Consultant for a company that designs and monitors intervention programs for families with young children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or related disability. I have also been following online training videos, seminars, and workshops on the ACT website.
