Article Critique:
An important part of study is being able to communicate to the public about research in your field. Today, unfortunately, there are many “pseudo- scientific” studies out there. As scientists, we need to be able to define what makes a study rigorous and trustworthy.
In this paper, you will review recent research in Computer Science and critique it. Tell your readers why the scholarship is excellent, or conversely, how it is lacking. Imagine your audience is not in your field, but does have general scientific background.
The science journal Nature, for example, is usually written for a more general audience than one of their specific publications, such as Nature-Geoscience.[Order Now]
You will both summarize and analyze the academic article. You examine how the research was done to form an evaluation of the overall effectiveness of the article. For example, Swales and Feak state that:
“In Engineering, you may notice that conclusions or explanations in a paper are not well supported and thus require further testing or more evidence.”
Pick an article that you have enough background in to understand. If articles from your field are too dense, consider one that you have personal experience in.
Read the article “Fog Computing for the Internet of Things: Security and Privacy Issues”, write a critique article. Or if you can find another better journal article in Computer Science, you can also use it. (The article should be published in recent 5 years)
You should write over 1300 words, double spaced. Citation should be APA format.
Note: Peer reviewed means an academic article, one that goes through a process called “peer review” where top experts in a field decide to publish it in an academic journal. Not all articles in an academic journal are peer reviewed articles- some are book reviews, or opinion editorials, so make sure the paper you pick is a research paper.
You cannot use a “review of literature” article. These are often called “review papers.”
Review articles are often summaries of many studies and are meant to give an overview on a particular topic. You need a paper that is from one study. It will be easiest to pick an empirical article, meaning that an experiment was made, rather than a theoretical article, for example one that proposes a new untested method or computer architecture
In the introduction:
Give the reader background they might need to know to understand your subject. You can use outside research to provide this background if needed, but be sure to cite it appropriately.
Make sure your reader understands the importance of the topic, and how it relates to their life. At the end of the introduction, give a short overview of the paper with the authors research questions and thesis. (Paraphrase the thesis and research
questions.) Then show your opinion by using the evaluative language in Swales and Feak chapter 6, such as “limited” or “insightful” (p.264)
Remember that many writers underestimate their audience, so make sure your introduction in understandable to someone outside of your field.[Order Now]
Body:
The first paragraph of the body section should summarize the article. Your reader has not read the article, so this is where you give a longer summary of just the main points. Subsequent paragraphs should be organized by points of critique.
For example, a paragraph could start with the claim that the methodology was very robust, and then back up that point with evidence of why it was robust (for example, good statistical sample, careful statistical analysis)
Conclusion:
Could include overall assessment, future research possibilities, reinforce why this topic is
important.
