Research topic
Dysthymia refers to the persistent depressive disorder. It involves the continuous chronic recurrence of depression in a patient. When patient suffers from this condition, they will feel hopeless, lose interest in the daily activities, lose productivity, and feel overall inadequate (Wilson and Allen, 2018).
These patients at the same time will have low self-esteem and these are symptoms which will last over several years. The presence of this chronic form of depression can lead to loss of critical relationships in the daily activities, at work, and in school. These symptoms will come and go over the years and intensity depend from time to time.
Typically, the given symptoms do not disappear for more than two or three months at a time (Wilson and Allen, 2018). There are major depression episodes which can occur at time and this is referred to as double depression for the patients. It is important to investigate the factors which help to avoid remission and those which push one back to depression.
Using a qualitative design will help someone to get an insight into how recovery can be maintained for different patients. Avoiding remission is a sure way of getting rid of the condition for the patients. The research question is what factors which hinder and help remission for patients with dysthymia.
The qualitative research design that is appropriate when looking at this research question is the phenomenology approach. This approach will seek to get the person to describe the experiences which they have lived when looking at the condition. Each of the people with the condition has their own realities and it is important to help them in a subjective manner as well as understand them.
The study will use a random sampling method to get a list of 50 individuals that will be interviewed. The population for this study is the individuals who have reported dysthymia and from them a sample of 50 individuals will be selected. The data collection will be conducted using personal interviews.
The interviews will have open ended questions to help the researcher investigate further on the feelings of the subjects. It is important to use interviews as the patients will be able to express their experiences and inner thoughts clearly (Silverman, 2016). An audio tape will be used to keep a record of the interviews. The data will be analyzed through classification of data. The researcher will be able to identify any themes which are recurring among the patients.
It is important to remember that as a researcher, one must protect the participants from any level of harm. As a psychologist, one has the duty to maintain the respect as well as the dignity of the participants. The first thing that one must do is to ensure that there is informed consent.
All of the participants in the study should be notified of how the information that they give will be used. It is important to assure that the details they give will not be shared with any other party except the researcher (Silverman, 2016). At the same time, there will not be the use of names in the study or any of the recordings.
At the same time, the patients have the right to withdraw their consent at any point during the study. One must understand that there are people who might not be ready to disclose all of their information because e of their backgrounds. All of these parties must be respected.
