The Structure: Your paper will essentially have five parts to it (but not necessarily five paragraphs). Part 1: Introduction in which you introduce the topic of your paper, tell the title and author of the story, and include a clear thesis. Part 2: Briefly summarize the story and discuss what you perceive to be its major theme (themes are statements, not single words) and how the author presents that theme. Use specific details and quotes from the story to show this. This should be from your perspective, although you could include outside sources as long as you cite them. This will probably take more than one paragraph. Part 3: Search for and find at least one article that addresses the theme you are discussing. The article does not need to be directly related to your story. Here are some examples: ● “The Battle with Mr. Covey” from The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass–racism, human cruelty, human dignity ● “A Pair of Silk Stockings”–consumerism/materialism, gender roles/responsibilities, social class ● “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”–psychological escapism, near death experiences, dreams vs. reality ● “A Mystery of Heroism”–heroism, pointlessness of war, conflict (internal or external) ● “To Build a Fire”–hostility of nature, loneliness, individualism After reading the article, summarize it briefly and discuss what the article says about the topic and how it relates to the story. Part 4: Present a Christian worldview to both the story and the topic of the article. Using your own opinions and beliefs plus a biblical perspective (ideally they are the same), answer questions such as the following: ● What do you think about the theme and are there actions, characters, details, etc. in the story that support your opinion? ● Does the Bible have anything to say about this theme, and are there actions, characters, details, etc. that either demonstrate or conflict with those ideas? Part 5: Conclude with a paragraph that sums up your paper, restates the thesis (in different terms), ties up loose ends, and gives your reader something to ponder. The Details: ● Type the paper using Google Docs. The name of your file should be Last Name, First Name, Response to Realism Essay. ● 3-4 full pages (not including Works Cited). ● Utilize MLA format for your heading (no title page), in-text citations, and a Works Cited page. ○ For this assignment, please use the MLA heading listed on the owl.purdue.edu website, NOT the heading listed on my board. For in class work, I expect the heading listed on the board. For all essays, please use this format: Name, instructor’s name, course, assignment. ● Double space and use Times New Roman 12 font. ● Make sure you are keeping track of any sources you use. Many websites will automatically cite the source in MLA format. I will be using the originality report feature in Classroom when you turn in the paper, so plagiarism will be detected. If they are not your words or ideas, give credit to the author. ● As far as sources go, be sure that you are using reliable, credible, academic sources. Not all dot-coms are bad, but make sure there is a reputable name attached to the article. Conversely, not all dot-orgs, dot-edus, and dot-govs are good. If you have questions about a source, send me a link and I will let you know. A great place to do research is through the PPLD website. Go to https://ppld.org/research where you will find a slew of databases. You will need a library card number and pin to access these. ● For questions concerning MLA, a good source is the following:

There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
