African-American Special
Story: African American Special (from the book Everyday People)
Topic: In this essay, the minimum word count will be 1,000 words, and the max will be 1,500, not including your Works Cited page) explain how theme works in relationship to (choose only one or two themes, not more) in the list of literary devices below.
Here is the general question you should answer in your thesis: What main theme connects directly to one or two of these?
List of literary devices and or themes: (Note, you will create your own thesis, main argument about the story you pick, and then you will connect it, with research, to one of these elements below.)
character,
historical context,
tone/voice,
symbols,
setting,
point of view,
Narrative Structure (Including a discussion of the three act arc, and rising and falling action, climax and resolution)
A thesis statement might read like this,
for example: In the short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver, thematic elements relate to the notion of love and lack of communication which can be found symbolically throughout the story.
Here is an example of a topic sentence (in case you forgot, a topic sentence is the first sentence of each body paragraph)
The sun symbolizes the deterioration of love as the narrator first describes the sunlit room as bright; however, as the story progresses the sun leaves entirely, and the idea of love becomes dismal and dark as well.
Research and Sources
The sources you will use are the ones listed on my Library Resource page— You will use a minimum of two sources from this list called APPROVED SOURCES on my page.
Your essay should include the following:
An introduction that uses the “funnel” technique – general to specific.
A thesis statement—at the end of the first paragraph. Body paragraphs, each should be supporting or proving your thesis.
Your body paragraphs should also contain strong topic sentences that relate to your claims.
Research supported evidence–you need to use at least two sources from the sources provided that are linked to this assignment.
Other sources do not count.
You will create a Works Cited page, and it will not be included in your page count.
NOTE: The purpose of this essay is for you to come up with, organize, and present your own thoughts on a selected theme/s that relate to another literary device in the story you pick from our book Everyday People. You will use your sources with care and thoroughness. Make sure that you double check whether your source use is strong and connects the piece of work to your thesis.
You must complete a detailed outline for your final paper. If yours is general, you will not receive points.
You must also submit the two sources you picked from our library page, and you need to answer this:
Which story from Everyday People are you writing about?
Why do you like this story? What does it mean to you?
Explain how you will use the two sources from our library web page, and how you will incorporate them into your paper.
