What is organ reserve and how does it change between young and middle adulthood? Organ Reserve is the capacity of function in our organs, how well our organs work. Organ reserve can depend on the genes of someone, but their lifestyle and environment also play a large factor. When one is young the function of our organs is very high, as time passes however the organs undergo stress which can hurt their functioning capacity. Some of the factors that can affect the capacity of the organs are illnesses, injury, and the environment in which they are exposed to inevitable as you age organ reserve decreases. How, according to the supplement article, can we protect and strengthen our organ reserve in middle adulthood? According to the supplement article we can begin to protect and strengthen our organ reserve in middle adulthood since the beginning of our lifetime, by building muscle mass. The reasoning for this is because it will help protect vital organs, it will help keep them functioning properly. Other ways to help protect and strengthen our organ reserve is by getting protein as well as taking supplements. From the supplement on drug use, what is the prevalence of drug use in adolescence vs. early adulthood? What is one factor that underlies these results? The prevalence of drug use in adolescence 12-17 is 28% while early adulthood 18-25 is 55% it increases double from adolescence. According to the supplement one of the factors for higher prevalence in early adulthood is more life stressors. At this age you are shifting from being a kid and having little to no responsibility to becoming an adult who is maybe starting college, moving out from home and now has more responsibility than used to. The stressors can lead to the use of drugs in search of relief and relaxation.
Discuss one personal example of when you used post-formal thought in college. I believe that as I was transitioning from high school to college, I had to use post-formal thought a lot in college because I was so used to just avoiding certain conversations in high school but in college it is a lot harder to avoid discussions. When participating in these discussions I had to be able establish perspective-taking and learn to respect the different points of views on certain issues, because not everyone is going to have the same viewpoint as I do. Give one example of an ageist stereotype that you have witnessed in your native culture. In my culture young adults 18-25 are not really respected and treated as adults. You are also expected to respect all of your elders, even if you do not receive the same respect back. It is not until early adulthood that you are actually viewed as an adult and respected as one. Why is middle adulthood sometimes called the “sandwich generation”? The middle adulthood is sometimes called the “sandwich generation” because they are stuck in the middle of caring for their parents while still caring for children of their own. Since people are now living longer the are helping care for their aging parents and since it is now common to wait have children, they are also taking care of those growing children.
