Brittany comes off as a supervisor that handles business and gets the job done. In all actuality, behind the scenes Brittany does not care about the people around her who she supervises. When dealing with Sid, Brittany failed to show any type of compassion for him and his expecting wife.
Although Sid understands he has a job to do, asking him about his financial situation and if he has a mother-in-law is completely disrespectful and tacky to say the lease. In dealing with Jeff, calling him a “old-timer” for asking for asking if he can take his ten-day vacation in five two-day increments was extremely uncalled for.
With the statements made to both Sid and Jeff, Brittany failed to show any form of compassion and was not afraid to let it be known. Those in leadership roles like Brittany are the main reason why people are leaving their jobs by the dozen.
Brittany’s leadership trait the seems to need the most development would be humility and warmth. Humility because she needs to understand that any moment because of how she treats those under her, they can/will leave the job at any time to make her do all the work.
Brittany seems to think that she is above the others, and they don’t deserve any time to themselves outside of work. With warmth, it helps establish rapport, helps provide emotional support whereas being cold tends to create distance from others (Dubrin, 2019). Being “warm” with those you work with shows that although you are in a leadership position, you are human and approachable.
Most importantly it shows that you care about them as a person, and it creates a safe and welcoming work environment which in turn makes people want to always do their best to the best of their ability.
In speaking of Brittany’s warmth as well as her enthusiasm as a leader, it’s safe to say Brittany lacks both. According to Andrew Dubrin, “In almost all leadership situations, it is desirable for the leader to be enthusiastic”. A supervisor who is enthusiastic will establish good relationships with employees since it will be perceived as a reward for their constructive behavior (Dubrin, 2019).
To improve Brittany’s leadership effectiveness, Derek should send her to a team-building class. Within this team-building class Brittany would learn positive forms of communication, how to be more respectful to others and how to show gratitude for those in the department. Each of these classes will make her become a more effective and positive lead which will boost morale in the department.
