DISCUSSION PROMPT: CASE STUDY REVIEW AND APPLICATION
Review the following case studies. Select one study and respond to the following questions:
CASE STUDY ONE:
Pastor Mark is facing a challenge in his church. With only about 50 people in attendance, resources for supervision and security are limited. Recently, a person with schizophrenia has been attending the church. This person, Paul, has demonstrated erratic behavior, raising his voice during the services and causing many parishioners to feel uncomfortable. He has approached children and attempted to engage them in conversation, but children will often feel uncomfortable and run away. Paul has also been requesting that Pastor Mark or other church members give him a ride to and from the service each Sunday, stating that public transportation causes him to have panic attacks and that he cannot afford it. A few church members have expressed to Pastor Mark that they feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Some have even stated that Paul is “very rude” and “inappropriate.” Pastor Mark is struggling to respond to this situation in a compassionate manner while still taking the safety and comfort of his other church attendees into consideration. Some people, especially those with young children, have started to talk about leaving the church.
CASE STUDY TWO:
Devaughn is a supervisor at a retail clothing store. He prides himself on supporting his employees and allowing them to become the best they can be. However, he has recently encountered a challenge with Maria. Maria was hired about six months before and presented very well in her interview. She expressed enthusiasm and stated that she had open availability. However, she has been less than reliable on the job. Maria expressed to Devaughn that she is a single mother and she has had extensive health problems recently. She often will show up late to work (10-15 minutes), causing disruption in the shifts of others who have to stay later than planned to run her register. At times she will break down in tears during her shifts, even sharing with customers that she is struggling to make ends meet. She often appears at work having not showered. Recently she had a “no call, no show” for her shift and later contacted Devaughn to say that her car had broken down, her cell phone service had been cut due to nonpayment, and her son was in the hospital. Devaughn struggles to determine the best decision, knowing that terminating Maria’s employment will place a significant increased financial strain on her and on her family. However, he cannot continue to support her as an employee when she is not reliable on the job. Devaughn believes in showing compassion and extending mercy, but he is unsure of what to do to address Maria.
CASE STUDY THREE:
Eleanor is an older, retired woman who often enjoys shopping at the local thrift store. This thrift store employs many people with disabilities, and Eleanor supports this initiative wholeheartedly. However, Eleanor has recently struggled with a few of the employees and has felt very uncomfortable in the store. Two young men working in the thrift store who are significantly impacted by cognitive disabilities have approached Eleanor recently, attempting to touch her or make comments on her physical appearance. She realizes that the employees are probably unaware that the behavior is inappropriate and that they do not have harmful motives, but she is unsure of what to do about the concerns. She realizes that, if she takes the issue to the supervisor, the individuals may be terminated for these inappropriate actions. She wants to support their opportunity to engage in a career, but does not want the thrift store to remain an uncomfortable place for her or other customers.
