Socialization and Biases in Social Media
Be sure to answer ALL questions in the prompt.
As we already know, social media affects our lives in many ways. This brings up the classic dilemma of which came first. Are people with specific attributes drawn to the social media they use, or do they develop these characteristics because of the social media they use; how, if at all, have the attributes of individuals changed as time and technology progressed?
Check out the three links below to craft your response this week. Provide an overview of what each link discusses and provide examples to help answer the above questions regarding social media and individual characteristics. Take note of the date on the articles as well. Do you think that makes a difference?
Think about the above and your own social media usage. What kind(s) do you use and why? What do you think about the attributes listed above for different social media users?
Choose two bullet points below to answer:
* How has your social media usage shaped your attitudes and behaviors over time? Can you identify any examples of the cultivation theory at work in your own social media usage?
* Have you ever learned something new through observation on social media? How does this align with the social learning theory?
* Do you find that your social media usage tends to amplify your existing beliefs, as described in the agenda-setting theory? Can you think of any examples of this happening?
* How do you use social media to escape from challenges or be entertained? How does this align with the uses and gratification theory?
* Can you think of any schemas used in your social media usage? How do these mental frameworks help you make sense of the information you encounter on social media?
