Word Analysis
Choose a word as your focus of topic and write a three point argument essay. This word should NOT be a racial slur. You can choose an equally controversial word that has to do with something else like: feminine, masculine, introvert, extrovert, confident, honest, loser, drama queen, sensitive, etc. Please do not use any of the listed examples and follow the guidelines below.
You could write about how a particular word has been misperceived or misunderstood, or how your particular word should or should not be banned from the English language. These reasons could be that the particular word has certain harmful effects, or & why we need to change our social definition (connotation) of a particular word. Whichever approach you choose, you must take a clear “side.” (6-7 paragraph essay with 10-11 lines per paragraph.)
Introduction: tell generally what society typically thinks when it hears your chosen word, or start with how the dictionary defines that word, and give a general discussion to lead into a three-point thesis with the following structure: The word ________ should (or should not) be outlawed because ________, _________, and __________.
Background: The second paragraph could include a dictionary definition and discussion of the denotation of the word. You could also include discussion on how society is more politically-correct (or aware) of word usage, talk about that, tell whether or not that is good or bad, and start to tell us what the “typical” expectations and meanings of your word are, and how society is right or wrong about those expectations and meanings, and lead into your three points.
Always start each point with “the first reason why the word “_____” is (or is not) harmful to American society is…. (or you can say “the first reason why the word “___” should (or should not) be banned/used is…..”
Then, thoroughly explain what you mean; give examples, tell why that is either good or bad.
Thoroughly discuss the “true” meaning, and why it should or should NOT be outlawed.
Discuss why people (tell which people) would disagree with this point, and give an answer to their opposition. Wrap up your point, and transition into the next point. You do not have to limit each point to one paragraph.
