reflect upon the relationship of hatred and the stranger.
Week 4 Essay Assignment
Details:
This week, you are to write a short essay (with an approximate length of 900 words). The essay has two parts.
Part 1 (approximately 600 words)
Orientation. Last week, we discussed the characterization by Pierre Hadot of the philosopher as a stranger. This is perhaps nowhere more powerfully dramatized than in Plato’s dialogue, The Apology of Socrates, you have begun reading this week. But there is more than just the “strangeness of philosophy” in Plato’s text: one of the key terms in the text is hatred (please refer to the Lesson for an elaboration of this).
Prompt. In this short essay assignment, you are asked to reflect upon the relationship of hatred and the stranger. Please use the following resource to help guide your reflections: “Xenophobia,” Wikipedia. Please also refer and explore at least one regional manifestation of xenophobia identified in the article. Note that each regional manifestation entry in the Wikipedia article contains links to more information on that that manifestation. Please click on the links to investigate this topic more fully. Bring your findings into this part of the essay. Please use proper citation conventions (see Purdue Owl resource below).
Part 2 (approximately 300 words)
Prompt. Please read the following passage from Julia Kristeva’s Strangers to Ourselves. Then offer your reflections on it.
Passage. “Foreigner: a choked up rage down in my throat, a black angel clouding transparency, opaque, unfathomable spur. The image of hatred and of the other, a foreigner is neither the romantic victim or our clannish indolence [laziness] nor the intruder responsible for all the ills of the polis [city].
Neither the apocalypse on the move nor the instant adversary to be eliminated for the sake of appeasing the group. Strangely, the foreigner lives within us: he is the hidden face of our identity, the space that wrecks our abode, the time in which understanding and affinity founder. By recognizing him within ourselves we are spared detesting him in himself. A symptom that precisely turns “we” into a problem, perhaps makes it impossible. The foreigner comes in when the consciousness of my difference arises, and he disappears when we all acknowledge ourselves as foreigners, unnamable to bonds and communities.” (Julia Kristeva, Strangers to Ourselves, 1)
