Wish we could all make a field trip to a restaurant, But alas distance and COVID make it impossible for us to all gather in one place right now. So, we’re going to do the next best thing. Here are the links to some great restaurants along with some information about each one. Check them out and choose the one to which you would like to make a virtual visit. Peruse the menu and decide what you want to order. Then, post your choices — along with a brief explanation for why you chose that restaurant, along with what you would like to order and why.
Bertha’s, Charleston, South Carolina
A soul food restaurant in Charleston and recipient of a James Beard Foundation America’s Classic award. Bertha’s doesn’t have a website, but you can get a taste of what the restaurant offers from this film by the Southern Foodways Alliance. https://www.southernfoodways.org/film/berthas/ (Links to an external site.)
The Bright Star, Bessemer, Alabama
Since 1907, this restaurant has been a favorite of people in Bessemer and Birmingham, Alabama., Owned and operated by members of the Koikos family for almost 100 years, The Bright Star was recognized as an American classic by the James Beard Foundation in 2010. https://thebrightstar.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Casamento’s, New Orleans
A personal favorite for raw oysters and fried seafood. https://www.casamentosrestaurant.com/main/main.html (Links to an external site.)
Doe’s Eat Place, Greenville, Mississippi
An institution in the Mississippi Delta, Doe’s is known for steaks and hot tamales. (Hot tamales are a thing in the Delta and there are a couple of theories about why that is — a topic for our Kitchen Conversation.) The restaurant has opened franchises; the one in Arkansas was a favorite of Bill Clinton back in the day before he became vegan. But the original place in Greenville is still the heart of it all. http://doeseatplace.com/index.html (Links to an external site.)
Galatoire’s Restaurant, New Orleans
It’s hard to get a bad meal in New Orleans, but this one is a sentimental favorite. It was my family’s restaurant of choice in New Orleans, a place to celebrate special occasions. My mom and her sister used to take each there for their birthdays. https://www.galatoires.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Highland’s Bar and Grill, Birmingham, Alabama
What can you say about a place named the best restaurant in America by the James Beard Foundation? If there is a restaurant in Heaven, it’s Highland’s Bar and Grill. https://highlandsbarandgrill.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Middendorf’s, Manchac, Louisiana
Growing up in rural Mississippi you develop a strange relationship with distance. A 70-mile trip (one way) to Manchac, LA for good seafood and fried catfish seemed perfectly reasonable, especially when Middendorf’s was the destination. http://middendorfsrestaurant.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Saw’s BBQ, Birmingham Alabama
Barbecue is a religion in the South, and like any religion it has its various denominations and sects each with their own cathedrals. But since I’m only picking one, it has to be Saw’s. https://www.sawsbbq.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Weidman’s Restaurant, Meridian, Mississippi
Another sentimental favorite, Weidman’s has been serving great food since 1870. Five generations of my wife’s family have gone to Weidman’s; in fact, we went there with our families right before we were married. And once the pandemic is over, the family plans to take my nephew’s children so they will be the sixth generation. http://www.weidmanns1870.com/ (Links to an external site.)
