Description
PURPOSE The main goal of a topic proposal for a research essay is to brainstorm a research plan. This is also your opportunity to explore not only what you want to learn but why you are interested in a particular topic.
Writing a proposal helps to ensure that you are undertaking your major project from a relatively solid beginning. Articulating a research plan will not only help you get started with the work, it should help you anticipate (and hopefully mitigate) some of the obstacles you may run into.
TASK Working from the Three Research Questions Assignment, you will choose one of your three research questions (or write a brand new one) that you would like to spend the rest of the term trying to answer.
Your proposal must include the following: Research Project Title Give your project a working title. It cannot be “102 Research Project” or “This Assignment Sucks.” Take care to give your reader a clue about the topic of the research. It can be somewhat general, but must be more specific than “criminal justice reform.” Consider including a two part title: the first part indicating the topic and the second part indicating the focus of the topic. For example, if I were researching implicit bias in healthcare, perhaps my working project title could be “Implicit Bias In Healthcare: Implications for Future Nurse Training” Research Question Share your research question directly underneath the title.
Your research question must have an answer that is debatable, plausible, consequential and cannot be binary: yes/no, good/bad, etc. Part 1: Interest, Significance, Audience (150-200 words) In a few sentences, explain why you’re interested in the topic. Consider the following sentence frame: “Within the broad field of mass incarceration, I have chosen to study X because…” You must also discuss why you think other people might be interested in your topic. Identify a specific audience for your argument. The specific audience cannot be “everyone,” “most people,” or anything else that resembles “all the people in all the land.” To make sure that you are not choosing a vague audience, a good rule of thumb is that if you cannot mail a letter specifically directed to them (not “mail-all”), you do not have a specific enough audience. Explain why you think this specific audience would benefit from your answer to your research question. Part I should make it clear why your particular project is significant. What do you see as your contribution to the conversation?
Part 2: The Current “Conversation” (200-250 words) As you know from English 101 and “The Academic Conversation”, writing does not happen in a vacuum. Effective arguments are grounded in a current conversation about the topic and aim to move that conversation forward; this conversation is often known as “The Scholarly Conversation,” sustained discourse with new insights and discoveries occurring over time as a result of varied perspectives and interpretations.
For Part 2 of this proposal, you will need to find, read, annotate, and analyze three sources that are currently participating in the conversation about your research topic. You’ll want to quickly summarize each source and explain how it contributes to the current conversation about your topic. Although there is no need to include a scholarly source here, you do need to make sure that each of the three sources you include is credible. Each source you mention must pass the CRAP test: currency, reliability, authority, point of view. It is important to make sure that the sources you are including in this section DO NOT answer your research question. If they do, there is no need for you to write your essay.
Part 3: Future Sources (150+ words) In this section, you will identify and discuss three specific sources that will help you answer your research question. Again, do not identify three sources that have already answered your research question. Look for sources that will help you answer the sub questions you mentioned in the Three Research Questions assignment. There is no need to read these sources, at least not yet. For now, just bring them into the proposal, explain why they are reliable and why you think they will help you answer your research question.
Part 4: Cognitive Biases (100+ words) Discuss at least three types of cognitive biases that you anticipate falling prey to and why. Additionally, you will want to discuss how you plan to avoid each of the three biases.
Part 5: Action Steps List (in bullet or numerical form) the next 5 tasks you need complete as they relate to your specific project. Do not simply mirror my deadlines. CRITERIA FOR “COMPLETE” A “Complete” proposal will include ALL of the following: Working title Focused research question with a debatable, plausible, consequential answer (not binary)
Part 1: thoroughly discusses interest Part 1: thoroughly discusses potential audience Part 1: gives the reader a sense of the significance of the project Part 1: meets the minimum word count
Part 2: identify and briefly summarizes three specific sources–must not answer the research question Part 2: generally conveys the current conversation about the topic Part 2: meets the minimum word count
Part 3: is clear how each of the three specific sources will help answer the research question Part 3: meets the minimum word count
Part 4: at least three types of cognitive biases are discussed (reasons and plan to avoid) Part 4: meets the minimum word count
Part 5: 5 clear tasks Properly formatted Works Cited Page MLA format Minimal grammar and punctuation errors: no more than three instances of one error
