. 1) Choose a fictional movie or book character. ?

. 2) Watch the film or read the book. See how you like it, be entertained, eat some popcorn, and just get a feel for it. Keep an eye out for any material we have covered from class or from your textbook.

. 3) Watch or read it again! This time, knowing what’s going to happen, you can look at the source through the eyes of a psychologist, and analyze the character to the best of your abilities! Some of you may try to do steps 2 and 3 at the same time. This may not work out as much as you’d like, you may catch some things on the second viewing, which weren’t as apparent the first time. ?

. 4) Write a paper! The requirements are below: Your paper should consist of four portions:

A brief synopsis of what happened in the film or book. Who was your character and what was his or herrelationship to the story line (talk about jobs, family roles, personality traits, motivations, goals, etc.)
A well thought out, insightful commentary on the psychological component(s) or phenomena portrayed in the film. This is where you show me how good you are at critical thinking. Choose 5 termsyou have learned throughout class (1 term per chapter) and relate them to the character.How was his or her psychological mindsetportrayed? What did you notice about the character and how could you relate it to what you have learned in class? Was the psychological term or phenomenon portrayed accurately? Does your textbook agree or disagree with what was portrayed/presented in the book/film? Be sure tonumberand bold your 5 terms as well asinclude the definitions, page number for the terms, theories, and concepts related to each of the terms being shown. Please only use psychological terms covered in class or your textbook. Also: Make sure to use the most specific term you can for the character. Do not use the term “Personality” when you can describe them better by using a theory of personality.
Give a review of the book/film’s quality. Be a critic! Let me know what you liked or didn’t like about the book/film. What kinds of feelings or thoughts did it bring up for you personally? How does it tie in to what you learned in class?

d.Finally, write a reference page and cite your sources. This will give you good experience for writing scientific papers in the future. I realize this may be the first time you have had to write in APA format, so I’m not going to be too hard on you, but I encourage you to come to my office if you have questions. It’s a lot easier to learn the right way first, than trying to erase a bad habit.
