The readings this week suggest that pop culture can be a force that unifies us rather than divides us. However, this theory seems to work better for some dimensions of pop culture (e.g., sports teams?) than other dimensions of pop culture (music genres or subgenres?). Which dimensions of pop culture do you see having the most potential to unite and build community? Which dimensions of pop culture do you think are least likely to do this? Why do you think there is a difference?
Popular Culture Pushback Discussion
I’m working on a writing discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
Answer the question below.
In the readings from Mara tea and Monahan, the authors suggest popular culture can be a force for good through “pushback” or “marketing” of social problems. (However, they also discuss the ways in which these efforts may not make significant contributions to social change.)
Think of one or more examples (not discussed in the book) of pop cultural “pushback” or “marketing.” In what ways did your example of popular culture try to push for social change or raise awareness of social problems? How successful was it? Can you detect any ulterior motives? If so, what were they and who benefitted?
