Unit I Journal
In this unit, we researched risks in the community. Reflect on what you think are the most common risks in your community. Do you think enough is being done to address these risks? How would you, as a chief officer of your community fire and emergency services agency, approach changing the risk behaviors that you identified?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit I Proposal:
Throughout this course, you will be developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. Your assignment for the Unit I Proposal is to provide a risk topic, problem, and purpose statement (Segment 1) in addition to demographics and department information for your CRR problem (Segment 2). You will submit this information to your professor to review and approve.
Segment 1
The first segment of your proposal should be in narrative form. Include specific information about the topics below in the first segment.
Segment 2
The second segment will address your community demographics and department information. All of your demographics need to be in chart format. Include the following information in your demographics chart:
The second segment will require research to provide you with demographics and department information. In order to develop a course of action to be undertaken in an effort to reduce risk, you must first gather sufficient data relative to the demographics of your community. The Demographic Profile document provides helpful information for locating information about your specific community.
Create a separate chart for department information. In the department information chart, review and provide your department’s response data for overall runs and risk-specific responses (you may have to request the information from a senior fire officer). If you are not currently employed with a department, you can often ask, through the Freedom of Information Act, to get a copy of your local fire and emergency medical services (EMS) response demographics or annual reports, some of which may be found online. If you cannot get the demographics or annual reports, request reports from an adjoining county. As a part of the assignment, you will look at the number of responses associated with your project’s identified risk. You do not need patient information. You may not have access to street or community locations for these responses, so you may need to rely on your personal knowledge of your community.
Combine both segments into one document for your proposal. Your completed proposal must be at least two full pages in length. You are required to cite and reference at least two outside sources. Be sure to cite and reference the sources for your demographic information and department data as well.
Follow APA Style when constructing this assignment. Please note that no abstract is needed.
Unit II Journal:
In this unit, you researched the six steps of the community risk reduction (CRR) planning process. Reflect on how you identified the most common risks in your community and which one is your highest priority. How would you, as a chief officer of your community fire and emergency services agency, justify that decision, and how do you support your conclusion?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit II Power Point:
Throughout this course, you will be developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. Your assignment for the Unit I Proposal was to provide a risk topic, a problem, a purpose statement, demographic information, and department information for your CRR problem.
Create a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of 12 slides that analyzes and presents the community demographics and risks that you identified in Unit I. Using charts, graphs, and photos, provide a brief synopsis of what the risk or demographic is. This presentation should validate why this is a risk and how you determined that. Utilize the notes section to detail and explain the information on each slide and why the information is relevant. Identify how the demographics you are highlighting specifically affect the risk and the community.
Your completed project should cite and reference at least two outside sources. Be sure to cite and reference the sources for your demographic information and department data. Follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
Unit III Journal:
Reflect on identification of risks and prioritization of risks in community risk reduction (CRR) planning. As a fire service leader, how could you prevent personal opinion from potentially biasing your department’s work on determining and prioritizing the risks in your community? How could you prevent bias from affecting your decision-making?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit III Assignment:
Throughout this course, you will be developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. Your assignment for the Unit I Proposal was to provide a risk topic, a problem, a purpose statement, demographic information, and department information for your CRR problem.
For this assignment, develop a memorandum to your chief that identifies the prioritized risk for the implementation of your CRR plan. Determine the probability of your identified risk and its potential effects in the community. Provide written documentation of why this is a priority and how it affects your community. Provide supporting information and a discussion about how you determined the risk as being a high priority.
Use a standard memorandum format with your station information on the form. Several styles and templates are available in Microsoft Word, so choose whichever one you feel is appropriate. You can also use this memorandum template , but be sure to replace all verbiage with your own.
Your completed memorandum must be at least two pages in length and should cite and reference at least two outside sources. Follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment. A title page, however, is not necessary, as the formatting should reflect a professional memorandum.
Unit IV Journal:
Reflect on how you implemented the mitigation activities that you identified in your community risk reduction (CRR) planning. As a fire service leader, who would be your internal and external stakeholders? How would you engage them and procure buy-in for the project?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit IV Assignment:
Throughout this course, you will be developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. Your assignment for the Unit I Proposal was to provide a risk topic, a problem, a purpose statement, demographic information, and department information for your CRR problem.
For this assignment, create a flowchart that shows the risks and the tactics utilized in your CRR plan to mitigate those risks. Include short- and long-term strategies as well as benchmarks and determining factors of those benchmarks. The tactics and strategies should directly relate to the risk and its potential effects in the community that you determined in earlier portions of your CRR plan.
Write an introduction to your flowchart that includes supporting information and a discussion. Provide written documentation of why the strategies and tactics implemented are a priority and how the mitigation actions should minimize or eliminate the risk. Describe the practices you used to prioritize the intervention strategies. Provide supporting information and discussion about how you outlined the risk and mitigation activities.
Your completed project must be at least two pages in length and should cite and reference at least two outside sources. Follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
Unit V Journal:
Reflect on how you implemented the community risk reduction (CRR) plan. What areas were challenging, and which did you feel were relatively simple when drafting the mitigation activities that you identified in your CRR planning? As a fire service leader, who would be your target audience for the CRR plan? How would you engage them and procure buy-in of the project?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit V Outline:
Throughout this course, you are developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces.
For this assignment, prepare a formal documented outline of the entire CRR plan for your community. Include data that you have utilized to date in the class, and incorporate that data into your CRR plan. Also, identify budget requirements and potential funding sources. This plan should utilize charts, graphs, and visuals, which may be placed in the appendix. Since this is a formal outline, you should use complete sentences in all sections of the outline.
Include an introduction that provides supporting information and discussion about how you determined the risk and mitigation activities. Describe how the five Es (emergency response, engineering, enforcement education, and economic incentive) of prevention and mitigation are implemented in your plan.
You may include the following headers in the outline of your plan. Create subheadings as necessary to break down individual components.
Your completed outline must be at least three pages in length and should cite and reference at least two outside sources that support your discussion. Follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
Unit VI Journal:
We talked in this unit about the importance of a positive culture in the fire service organization when it comes to accepting and implementing a community risk reduction (CRR) program. However, some organizations are simply resistant to change. If you accepted a leadership position in a fire service organization that was resistant to change, what initial steps would you take to create an accepting culture?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit VI Assignment:
Throughout this course, you are developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. A vital part of implementing any CRR plan is getting buy-in from the local leaders and community members.
For this assignment, provide a 5- to 10-minute video of you presenting your CRR plan as you would if you were presenting to a civic organization, the city council, or your local governing body. This video would serve as the public service announcement for the launching of your CRR plan to the community. Your video should be a professional presentation that should highlight the problem and the purpose of the CRR plan. It should also describe what steps your CRR plan will implement to mitigate the risks and the resources that will be required, and it should identify the stakeholders and other supporting agencies. Furthermore, highlight the data you gathered as justification for the CRR plan to mitigate the risks that you identified as well as the goals and objectives you established to implement and deliver the CRR plan.
Keep in mind that you are presenting to a civilian audience. You are not speaking to your chief or to other members of the fire department. As such, do not use any terminology that is specific to the fire service unless you explain it in layman’s terms.
The video must be 5 to 10 minutes in length and should be uploaded to YouTube. The Video Upload Instructions document offers helpful tips for recording and uploading your video. Include charts or graphics as necessary to effectively present your findings. Submit a Word document with the link to your video included. Outside sources are not required for this assignment, but if you cite any statistics or present any information from outside sources, the document you submit should also include an APA Style reference list.
If it is not possible for you to complete this assignment, you must contact your professor, present your reasoning, and request instructions for the alternative assignment. If you are requesting the alternative assignment, you must e-mail the professor at least 3 days before the assignment’s due date.
Unit VII Journal:
Imagine that you are two years into your community risk reduction (CRR) plan; the data is showing unchanged risk levels, requiring major plan modifications. Thinking about the plan that you developed in this course, what are two ways you can address the issues with community leaders to maintain buy-in and keep everyone committed to the plan?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit VII Course Project:
Throughout this course, you are developing a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. A vital part of implementing any CRR plan is continually monitoring, evaluating, and modifying the plan after implementation and during the course or scope of the CRR plan.
Develop a plan for identifying benchmarks and what would constitute achieving benchmarks, and provide secondary measures if milestones are not achieved. Procedures for monitoring CRR plans are not one-size-fits-all, so you need to look at your specific plan and the metrics you established for success to review and come up with a monitoring plan. Your plan should be thorough with clear expectations of what each benchmark is and what clearly constitutes the standard of achievement. Include the components listed below.
Your completed plan for identifying CRR benchmarks must be at least two pages in length. Outside sources are not required for this assignment. If outside sources are used, please follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
Unit VIII Journal:
Identify a task that you would need to perform in your current career or future career, and explain how you would apply the knowledge you have learned in this course to succeed at performing the task in a real-word scenario. As an emergency services leader, how can you use the concepts from community risk reduction in your own organization?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
Unit VIII Assignment:
Throughout this course, you developed a community risk reduction (CRR) plan for a risk that your community faces. A part of implementing any plan is to provide an executive summary, overview, or after-action report of what was implemented, how it was implemented, lessons learned, and participants of the CRR plan. Your final assignment for this course is to draft an executive summary of your plan to provide this information. Be sure to include the components listed below.
You are not required to use any specific format or headings for your executive summary. If you have never written an executive summary, access the “Writing Recommendations and Executive Summaries” article from the CSU Online Library, which provides some helpful information.
Your report must be at least three pages in length. If outside sources are used, please follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.
