My name is Catherine Klicek and I am currently in my second year at UCSB. I am a Communication major but I am also pursuing a certificate in Technology Management. While I am not yet sure of which aspect of Communication I want to focus on, I am interested in marketing and public relations. I am from Santa Clara, California and am currently working remotely from here, though I do really miss Santa Barbara right now.
The title of this class immediately caught my interest because I have currently never taken a class that seems to discuss sexuality and romance so explicitly. I am interested in how love and romance will be addressed in an academic manner and am hoping to learn more about these topics from a different perspective. Specifically, I am curious about conceptions of love and romance within the animal kingdom and to what extent this relates to humanity.
From my own understanding, sex is an action that occurs between two or more individuals. Sex can be purely a physical interaction, sometimes with the sole goal of reproduction. More often, the reasons for engaging in sex are more complicated and can involve a mix of seeking enjoyment, peer pressure, and seeking romantic connections.
Sex can be initiated by or lead to an emotional connection between those who engage in it. While sex is not always consensual, sex should be explicitly agree upon between the parties involved in it. Sex can occur between multiple people, multiple genders, or not include anyone other than oneself.
Love is an emotion that an individual can feel towards single or multiple people. There are a few different types of love, including romantic love, friendship love, family love, and unconditional love. Romantic love is between individuals who feel strongly emotionally connected and is commonly associated with a sexual relationship. Friendship love encompasses a more platonic love between individuals in which friends or acquaintances possess feelings of affection for another. Family love occurs between individuals who are genealogically related to each other.
This type of love can be between siblings, parents, children, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and other family members. Lastly, unconditional love, also called agape love, is a love for anyone or anything that persists in spite of any actions. Despite this, any type of love is not always returned by the recipient, which results in unrequited love.
Romance is a concept that can be used to describe both an action and an emotion. Romantic feelings are often the result of romantic actions. This action usually occurs between individuals engaging in romantic love or is intended to lead towards romantic love. While what is determined a romantic action is highly subjective, romantic actions typically display affection and in-depth knowledge of the recipient’s preferences and personality.
Sex, love, and romance are all concepts that are closely tied to each other and interrelated. The action of sex is often induced by romance but can also occur exclusive of romance. Sex often occurs between those engaged in romantic love but in taboo situations, occurs between individuals engaged in different types of love.
