Judgment of Families on A Traditional Family Discussion
Family – once considered the “most important institution” according to Talcott Parsons, resides along side the other institutions that help our society remain self-sufficient and running smoothly. One cannot deny what constitutes a family depends on the individual within it. Sociologists note how family influences society and vice versa (how society influences the concept of family) – despite the rhetoric that “traditional family” is disintegrating we note (using our sociological imagination) that it is changing, and ever evolving.
Read the article “Families: There’s no Longer Any Such Thing as a Typical Family (Links to an external site.)” by Belinda Luscombe.
Why do you believe many people hold up the idea of a traditional family or the modern marriage as a benchmark against which families or marriages are judged? From a sociological perspective are certain forms of family better than others, and why would this be so? Discuss what makes the ideal family form or the ideal marriage in this day and age (if there is such a thing). Explain your answer. (note an interesting, optional article very related to this discussion — Stephanie Coontz’s interview: The Way We Weren’t (Links to an external site.))

Hey Everyone,
Traditional marriages are old, with certain outdated social traditions being imposed on a society that is no longer traditional. As broad as this may appear, it is very true now that we think differently in modern times. Also, traditional families are not so common in this society anymore, there are many single moms and parents that both work.
And yes marriages do get judged by older individuals that are very traditional because now we are more open about same-sex marriages and more. Yes, there are certain forms of families better than others that would be so because many people see on tv shows and movies what perfect family is being shown.
And that would make people feel that by comparing the perspective they see about a family it changes on what they think is a better family than others. There is no such thing as an ideal marriage or family at this day and time but many think to believe so. Everyone has their own perspective of what they see as an ideal marriage and family.
