My Fall 2015 case background: Theranos emerged a few years ago as a disrupter in the lab testing industry. The claim of the company is about the usage of on-site testing, new technology, and affordable prices that may modify the traditional laboratories. The company’s founder, Elizabeth Holmes, became a member of the Forbes 400 list and even Walgreens join the efforts of the company to use several stores in the West coast to test the technology. However, recent stories published by the Wall Street Journal have questioned the validity of the business model. Even more, the FDA published a report that also questions the practices of the company so Walgreens will not pursue further expansions on its ongoing alliance.

First question

The owners of a very successful business needs to make a decision about its future strategic orientation as two contrasting options are presented to the family members who are also the majority owners of the business. On one side, technological changes have made the business to think about an online strategy (e.g. creating a website, allowing electronic commerce, etc.).

On the other side, the business can decide to look for international options where technological changes are not so critical. Let us assume that the family has a distant cousin named Elizabeth Holmes who is currently jobless and needs to find a job to pay for her legal fees (she is expected to go to court) so the family wants to use her past business experience to help them decide about these options. Particularly, the family is inexperienced at both technological and international levels,

Will you recommend the family to hire Elizabeth to help them on solving this problem?
