This week’s discussion, I partially continued with some of the theme of last week’s discussion. Upon discussing this weeks and last week’s discussion with a co-worker and friend, he suggested I looked into Margaret Heafield Hamilton. Many may not have heard of Margaret, but she is a prime example of how a diversity initiative can be successful. In the 1960’s and 70’s was the push for women to have greater freedoms. They wanted to be able to easily attend work, and work in fields that were seen as male only.
This became known as the Women’s Rights Movement (Sometimes called the Women’s Liberation Movement). Margaret was part of the NASA diversity initiative that let women into the field. Margaret assisted with software development. She plaid a pivotal role in the software to assist in the flight of John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth. She later went on to develop the warning and fail safe software for Apollo 11, which was vital for our astronauts to return home. Upon attempting to land on the moon, Apollo 11’s computer begins throwing codes. The astronauts accidentally left some functions on and was putting too much strain on the computer.
It was Margaret’s software that alerted them to the issue. Upon restarting the system, it was also Margaret’s fail safe software that assisted in saving the data, so once restarted, the crew could continue from where they left off. Upon researching Margaret Heafield Hamilton, I ran across the movie “Hidden Figures”. This movie highlights many of the women who assisted NASA in the early days. This includes Katherine Johnson. Katherine was a large step in diversity for NASA. Not only was she a female, like Margaret, but she was also African American. She was employed with NASA during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. These initiatives to get women into the field and people of other racial culture proved to be successful.[Order Now]
What Margaret and Katherine lend to these endeavors were crucial to the success of NASA’s early missions, and ultimately led us to beat Russia to the moon in the Space Race. The initiative helped the company by achieving their goal of being the first to the moon. Whereas, the initiative helped the employees to realize the company’s goal and in the case of the astronaut employed, keep them safe and return them home

How does a multicultural workforce improve a company’s productivity?
Diversified management and gender came out of women’s’ tennis from the U.S Open and U.S. Tennis Association granted this would have not been addressed if it was not something that was wrongfully done by a Champion or someone of top ranked. Serena Williams took a stand when she felt she was wrongfully carded by a male umpire during one of her US Open matches and she brought the attention to the company for the sexism, racism, and biased as an individual.[Order Now]
The company was made aware of what was going on and made sure that men and women and realized that “diversifying management is arguably the best way to foster inclusive behavior (Gaudiano, P. (2018, September 11)” and “companies should have clear procedures for lodging complaints, and policies that do not discourage their employees from voicing their concerns, the leadership needs to be fully behind these policies and use any complaints as opportunities to improve (Gaudiano, P. (2018, September 11)” for future opponents and inclusive society to have equal prizes in all categories.
They showed that in 2017 more people watched the women’s US Open with 1.9 million people versus men that was only 1.5 million, showing that the increase in female diversity and leading as athletes in a underrepresented minorities to inspire youth and drive them to future professions in the sports organizations and brings a great impact in society.
